Thinking about Thinking

For all those who do not have time to peruse weighty textbooks.. here is a nice online book published by the CIA.

It is the "Psychology of Intelligence Analysis" and deals with the topic in a straightforward, no-nonsense way and avoids jargon.

Making the case for a dedicated Design war room…

As you can see, I am seeding this blog with a few posts to encourage HFES ITG members to ask questions, post ideas etc. Could be about anything. So if you get tired of seeing my bland posts, please free to jump in and say so...besides, I hate talking to myself.

Anyway.. this question is one I would appreciate input on...I am in the process of creating a business case for a dedicated war room for UI designers in my group to have a permanent place to post their design concepts for review - by peers and project team members. Also to serve as a place for informal usability evaluations, heuristic reviews, cognitive walkthroughs, brainstorming etc.

Of course, I'm trying to set it up on the cheap, so it does not become a departmental white elephant. Any suggestions on what I should have in there to encourage free exchange of ideas?

Note: The good ol' standby of alcoholic beverages is frowned upon :)

Hey.. why isn't anyone posting?

We have several members signed up now, so I am hoping that we start seeing some new posts soon, not just comments!

2 questions:

1. Does Pawan have the 'official' list of all ITG members?
2. Can we invite colleagues/fellow professionals to participate even though they may not be members of HFEs or the ITG group?

Research on Web-based applicatons

Does anyone know the names of individual researchers who are doing cool work in web-based applications and in other related areas? If you know the organization they are in, that would be great. I will look forward to hearing from the group. I think there may be some opportunities to invite them to my company to speak, or perhaps even consult.

regards,

Ajoy

Blogs of Interest... maybe

Here is a good place to start - this is a blog that collects all UI related information from all over.

UI Designer

and when you are done with that.... you can check out Matthew Oliphant's Blog. He is quite well known in certain, shall we say, shady circles.

Minutes of 2004 Internet Technical Group Business Meeting

Internet Technical Group Business Meeting at HFES Annual Conference, New Orleans

1. 2004 ITG Program.
Marc reported that we had a great set of papers this year. A huge appreciation to all reviewers, we had at least three reviewers for each paper. There were three ITG sessions and four posters. No panels or other alternative formats were submitted.

2. 2005 ITG Program (proposed)
For next year’s program, we would like to have more demos, panels, and other formats. Demos should not be product ads, but rather new methods, techniques, or technologies.
Ideas generated:
a. Rolling out new systems (eg. mainframe to web) – social aspects, transition management.
Moderator Sanjay Batra; Speakers Arnie Lund, Ajoy Muralidhar, Gavin Lew, Bob Shoemaker
b. Design Case Studies
c. Content management for Search
d. Debate – designing to support browsing, searching, or product database access.
e. Workshop - Workshop on designing search user interface – Marc Resnick to prepare.

3. ITG Blog
Ajoy will set up an ITG blog on Blogger and email to ITG members the URL. The idea is a more informal communication than CHI-Web etc.

4. HFWeb
Mary Czerwinsky will be pinged to get Microsoft support to host. Or a university on Colorado with logistical support from Pawan Vora and technical support from Wichita State.

5. Nominations for ITG offices:
ITG Chair – Hugues Belanger (Surprise, Hugues!)
ITG Program Chair – Marc Resnick (Again!)
ITG Blogger – Ajoy Muralidhar (Sucker!)

Welcome to the ITG Blog

Well, here it is... as promised. We discussed the problem of maintaining a Newsletter and ListServ at the HFES conference, and we agreed that a Blog may be a good way for all of us to keep in touch.

I offered to set it up and be the moderator, so here are the ground rules -

1. there are no hard and fast rules for posting here - case by case basis
2. if commenting on a fellow member's post, please be respectful
3. not to be used as channel for pushing consulting services
4. by all means include links to your organization or company
5. you may post articles, snippets or your own thoughts
6. please make sure you respect copyright laws and brands - credit the owners

hopefully, I will be able to send out the invitations as soon as Marc sends me the minutes from the meeting with the list of attendees.

regards,

your friendly neighborhood moderator
